Bicycle - airplane ... hardly any difference, is there? When it comes to quality and accuracy, no difference is made between the two at Thomson Bikes. The company from Macon, USA, has been supplying bicycle parts such as seat posts, stems or handlebars since the 1980s. Before that, however, the family-owned company was already known as a supplier of aerospace parts. Find out here what it takes to make bikes fly….

Things to know about Thomson Bike bicycle parts

With other bike part manufacturers, the first step is to come up with an idea for a new component. In the second step, an actual manufacturing process for this bicycle part must be created. At Thomson Bike, it was the other way around. The company was already known for precision-machined metal parts, because engineer Ronnie Thomson specialized in the production of CNC-milled aluminum parts for aircrafts. In other words: He knew how to make things. But what things? How about having a go at seat post, for example? And applying that existing expertise to bicycle parts?

The rest is history. To this day, Thomson is a family run business that manufactures aerospace parts. But apart from that, it has also become a well-known producer of high-quality bicycle components. After testing the territory with said seatpost expanding into the world of bike components proved to be an immediate success. No big surprise, after all, the company's motto is

Always innovating, never imitating.

The first – and now legendary – lightweight Thomson seatpost was followed by other bicycle parts. New materials were tested as well, and today you can buy Thomson bike components made of carbon or titanium, they weigh even less while at the same time providing an even better performance.

We've got one small fun fact for you too: Often the company is mistakenly searched for as "Thompson Bikes" instead of "Thomson Bikes", because many Thompsons are spelled with a "P". But in this case it's wrong...

Seatposts made by Thomson

A CNC-milled seatpost got Thomson started in the field of bicycle parts and ever since their seatposts have been groundbreaking. The reason is simple… bicycle parts that have to be hard wearing but at the same time should be particularly lightweight, benefit from manufacturing techniques tried and tested in aircraft construction. "Withstand a lot" ... this applies first and foremost to the seatpost, because the rider’s entire body weight rests on it. You won’t be surprised to read that Thomson’s posts are considered the most durable you can find anywhere in the world.

Accordingly, the range of Thompsons seatposts is not huge, but first-class, they are available in all possible designs. Straight or set back, with different diameters or in different lengths ... there’s a lot to choose from! You can buy them in lengths from 250mm up to 410mm and with a diameter from 25mm to 32.4mm. Despite being lightweight, they can carry a lot of weight, which is something they have copied from aircraft parts.

The two seatposts Masterpiece and Elite are Thomson's best-known products, the versatile Thomson Elite seatpost is still built according to the designs of the company’s founder Ronnie Thomson. Masterpiece is the racier version, its durability is comparable to Elite posts, but it weighs a few crucial grams less thanks to a special manufacturing process. If you want to treat your bike to a very special part, you can mount a Thomson seatpost made of titanium, carbon versions are also available.

Thomson bike parts

Seatposts are considered Thomson's "masterpiece", after all, a seatpost was the company's first try in bike parts. But over the years, the portfolio for outstanding bike components has evolved to include stems, handlebar clamps, and spacers made of milled aluminum. If you are looking for a durable and particularly lightweight handlebar, you should shop one of Thomson’s drop bars or flat bars for MTBs. The steerers for road bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes are available in various designs, diameters and widths, there are also parts made of carbon, aluminum and high-end pieces made of titanium.

Thomson top quality bike parts

Thomson Bikes promises perfect bike parts in every respect, and the basic requirements for this are certainly given. When building aircraft parts, there is no tolerance whatsoever for inaccuracies, and not only the material mix must be impeccable, but also the fit must be 100% accurate. Of course, in addition to this every part must be as lightweight as possible ... after all, a spacecraft is supposed to take off, and airtime is something many bikers enjoy too. Last but not least, all Thomson Bike parts are put through substantial testing in accordance with the aviation certification procedures. So when you buy bike parts from the self-proclaimed "aerospace bike geeks" (aka Thomson Bikes), you can expect them to last and last and then last some more ... no matter what you do to them.
