Facts to know about Fuji Bikes

Fuji Bikes was founded in 1889 in Japan by Okazaki Kyujiro. In the beginning Nichibei Fuji imported bikes from England and the USA to Japan. Not even the company name hinted at the fact that Fuji would one day become the most popular bicycle brand in Japan, Nichibei Shokai translates to "Japanese-American Trading Company" and mentions neither bikes nor production of any kind. Just a few years later Fuji began experimenting with its own designs, in the 1930s it was ready to initiate and establish the first stage cycling race from Osaka and Tokyo, and outfit the winning team with Fuji bicycles, which helped the brand to a huge boost in popularity. Starting in 1919, sales were expanded to other Asian countries, in Japan Fuji was the most popular bicycle brand of the 1920s. In the 1950s, the bikes were imported to the U.S., and in 1971 Fuji America was formed to permanently establish the brand on the American market.

A pioneer in team sponsorship

Fuji Bikes soon began bringing together engineers, mechanics and sponsored professional athletes to develop bicycles of the highest technical level that have what it takes to celebrate success on the race tracks. The link between racing cyclists and the brand was particularly close in the 1960s and 1970s, when Fuji's chief designer, Shoichiro Sugihara, not only designed the bikes for Japan's Olympic team, he was also the team's head coach.

Feels like Fuji
